Rain showers in California’s Salinas and San Joaquin Valleys will cause harvesting and loading delays for the second time in the last seven days. On Sunday, November 8, intermittent rainfall passed through these growing regions, and forecasts are calling for rain to continue today through the early afternoon. The Salinas area will likely record over half an inch of rain, and the Huron, California region may see approximately .30-40 inches. Santa Maria, California is expected to receive only .15”, but even this small amount will have a serious impact on strawberry supplies that are already extremely tight.

Markon has worked with our key grower/shippers in all of the above-mentioned areas to pack lettuce, strawberries, and other row crop items in anticipation of the rain. If field conditions become too poor, some growers may cancel today’s harvest. Those that continue working will be making efforts to keep boxes clean and dry through today’s and tomorrow’s shipments, but elevated levels of dirt/mud may still occur.
