UPDATE: Limes
July 17, 2018
Markon First Crop (MFC) and Markon Essentials (ESS) Limes are available. Prices are rising; fewer limes are crossing into the U.S. from Mexico. The market is poised to climb over the next several weeks. Overall volume will remain adequate, but quality will be a serious concern. Markon recommends ordering for quick turns.
- High temperatures and wet weather in the primary growing region of Mexico are causing quality issues and shortening shelf-life
-
Growers in Mexico are experiencing reduced yields due to heat- and rain-damaged fruit
- When product arrives into South Texas or Southern California, breakdown, decay, stylar, and yellowing issues are more prevalent than normal
- Suppliers are re-packing and sorting limes prior to shipping on Markon orders, but heavy cull rates are resulting in fewer limes on the market
- Overall supply will meet demand over the next few months, but quality fruit will command higher prices
- Loading delays may occur due to longer re-pack times
- Prices are poised to rise several dollars over the next two to three weeks; a major spike is not expected at this time
