UPDATE: Limes
January 05, 2017
Lime prices will climb over the next week as growers face rising fuel prices and major disruptions to transit lanes within Mexico. Although market levels typically decline by early January (once the holiday season is over), fewer shipments into South Texas will reduce overall industry supplies. Expect elevated markets for the next two weeks as growers address the current situation.
- Markon First Crop Limes are available from Mexico (loading in McAllen, Texas)
- A recent rise in Mexican fuel prices has caused protests in multiple regions of the country
- Congested roads, gas station closures, and delayed border crossings will limit the influx of shipments into South Texas
- Lime prices will rise over the next week; expect elevated prices for two to three weeks
- Demand is strongest for medium sizes (200- to 230-count supplies)
- Current quality is excellent, but as supplies diminish, fruit will require more sorting for issues such as discoloration and scarring
