UPDATE: Limes
March 18, 2015
Lime prices are elevated. Mexico’s spring harvesting has started, but initial volume is low; rain has hindered production. Limes must be dry before harvesting to avoid quality issues. The market will remain high for the next two to three weeks when stocks are forecast to increase.
- Limited supplies and strong demand will keep prices elevated
- Quality concerns from recent wet conditions have resulted in some stem decay and yellowing; growers are repacking fruit for best quality
- Mexico is the world’s largest producer and exporter of limes to North America and Europe
- Key limes and Persian limes are grown year-round in the warmer southwest and southeast regions of Mexico
