UPDATE: Lettuce and Leafy Greens in the Salinas Valley
October 04, 2016
Lettuce and leafy green prices are expected to remain low through next week; supplies are readily available. Salinas Valley weather fell back into the high 60s/low 70s at the beginning of the week and will reach the low 80s by the end of the week; no rain is in the forecast.
Lettuce
- Last week’s warmer weather pushed some fields 6-10 days ahead of harvesting schedule
- Liner weights have consistently been in the mid-40s with some in the 50-pound range
- Markon expects weights to fluctuate as growers move in and out of different fields and to harvest the best quality
- Mildew and mildew damage are now widespread throughout the industry; dense texture is being found occasionally as well
Leafy Greens
- Some growers were behind schedule and have actually caught up due to the recent heat
- Sun-scorching remains a problem in the hotter areas; weak tip and mildew concerns are sporadic
- Internal burn is also being found, although not significant amounts
- Weights are fluctuating due to these quality problems, but it isn’t a major concern at this time
