Despite last week’s rain and cooler temperatures in the San Joaquin/Salinas Valley regions, growers of variety lettuces and leafy greens are making the move out of the California/Arizona Desert and heading north. Expect iceberg lettuce to follow suit and transition the week of March 19. Iceberg and leafy greens shipments will continue out of the California/Arizona Desert through early April.   

• Unlike last year at this time, growers are not seeing substantial planting gaps, but prices are expected to remain high over the next few weeks due to:
  • February’s abnormally cold weather that has slowed growth and may create quality issues in the coming days
  • Stronger-than-normal demand as the Easter holiday nears

• Markon anticipates quality to improve and pricing to ease in late April
