UPDATE: Lettuce and Leafy Greens Outlook
January 05, 2018
Warmer-than-normal weather conditions continue in Western Arizona and California’s Imperial Valley. These higher temperatures are maturing iceberg, leafy greens, and mix items ahead of schedule by 10 to 14 days.
-
Without consistently cooler weather, lettuce and leafy green varieties will mature faster than forecast, causing:
- The potential for a supply gap from February to March, depending on Mother Nature
- Growers to delay scheduled harvests, in an attempt to stay on the planned harvesting schedule and not disc any further acreage
- Iceberg and leafy green heads will become denser as the plants will be past peak maturity at the time of harvest
- Barring adverse weather conditions over the next several months in California’s Salinas and Central Valley California growing regions, a normal transition is predicted for mid- to late March
- Markon predicts elevated iceberg and leafy green markets when/if the supply gap occurs (February to March)
- Historically high price points like the industry experienced last year are not forecast
- California’s current weather pattern is allowing Salinas and Santa Maria growers to follow normal planting schedules
- Growers are not hampered by heavy rain and wet fields like last year
