UPDATE: Leafy Greens
June 20, 2017
Abnormally warmer temperatures continue to impact raw product quality, supply levels, and shelf-life of leafy greens such as arugula, spinach, and spring mix. Salinas Valley temperatures reached the mid-90s this week, impacting quality. Expect limited supplies and shortened shelf-life potential for the next 10 to 14 days.
Arugula
- Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) Wild Arugula is available; packer label will be substituted as needed
- Quality issues such as yellowing and premature breakdown may be present
Spinach
- RSS Washed & Trimmed Spinach is sporadic; packer label will be substituted as needed
- Quality issues include mildew, brittleness, small size, and mechanical damage
- Product is respiring more quickly than normal, causing additional condensation in the bag
Spring Mix
- RSS Spring Mix is available; packer label will be substituted as needed
- Overall quality is good, but expect some premature yellowing, mildew, wind damage, and higher respiration rates
- Processors are making necessary adjustments to maximize quality and minimize issues
