UPDATE: IDAHO POTATOES

July 30, 2020

Idaho’s Burbank storage crop season is winding down. Limited supplies of Markon First Crop (MFC) Idaho Burbank Potatoes will be available through next week. Limited quantities of new crop, field-run packer label Norkotahs will hit the market next week.

Storage Crop

  • Burbank quality remains good; pressure bruising and hollow heart may be seen on occasion
  • Pricing will remain elevated as supply does not meet current demand

New Crop Norkotahs and Burbanks

  • New crop Norkotah cartons are expected to be $3.00 to $7.00 higher than storage crop Burbanks
  • The U.S. No. 2 potato supply will be scarce, as new crop potatoes exhibit very few defects during the early stages of harvesting
  • Quality in test digs is excellent: minor skinning and excess moisture may be observed in fresh-run potatoes
  • New crop potatoes have not gone through the sweat process yet
    • Potatoes may release moisture as they cool, causing very light, white surface residue that can be easily be brushed off
    • The white residue will dissipate as potatoes dry and does not pose any quality problems
  • New crop Burbank production will begin in late September/early October
