UPDATE: IDAHO POTATOES

May 28, 2020

Markon First Crop (MFC) Idaho Burbank Potatoes are available. Prices for 40- to 70-count supplies are rising as the crop is dominated by smaller sizes. New crop Norkotahs will be available in late July/early August, depending on weather.

Storage Crop

  • The Burbank variety will be shipped until new crop, field-run Norkotahs become available in late July/early August
  • 40- through 70-count stocks will require more lead-time to produce; expect active pricing
  • 90- to 120-count potatoes dominate supplies; markets will remain steady
  • Expect steady pricing and availability for No. 2-grade supplies

Storage Crop Quality

  • Low temperatures during harvesting (back in October 2019), have affected the integrity of storage crop Burbanks
    • Pressure bruising can be exacerbated when product is being run, increasing time needed to pack orders
    • Sheds will need to run more raw product to pack the same number of cartons, reducing available supplies
  • Pressure bruising and hollow heart will become more prevalent in potatoes weighing 10 ounces or more
