UPDATE: Idaho Potatoes
March 15, 2017
Markon First Crop Idaho Burbank and Norkotah Potatoes are available. Size is dominated by small-size potatoes (80- through 100-count stocks); larger sizes (40- through 70-count supplies) are tighter. The Norkotah crop will be depleted by the end of April. The Burbank variety will be shipped until new crop, field-run Norkotahs become available in mid- to late August. Expect prices to gradually increase over the next several weeks.
Storage Crop
- Idaho received extremely heavy snowfall this season; recent warm weather quickly melted snow in the valleys
- Several storage cellars are not accessible by truck due to excess ground moisture from snow runoff
- Supplies will tighten over the next few weeks until the ground dries and more cellars become accessible
- Storage crop quality is good; pressure bruising and hollow heart are sporadic issues
New Crop
- 2017 new crop potato planting will begin in Western Idaho in late March/early April
- Growers in Eastern Idaho will start planting in mid- to late April
- New crop Norkotah harvesting will start by mid- to late August
