Abnormally warm temperatures persist in the Arizona/California desert growing region with temperatures 15 degrees above average expected later this week. Temperatures are in the low to mid-80s, but will increase to the high 80s tomorrow through Friday, then cool to low 80s/high 70s by the weekend. Iceberg weights and quality have been significantly impacted by this hot weather. Markon First Crop (MFC) Premium Iceberg Lettuce is not available due to light weights; Markon Best Available (MBA) is being substituted.

• Iceberg heads are growing inconsistently, causing carton weights to vary heavily from one lot and grower to another

• Fields remain two to three weeks ahead of schedule, forcing growers to harvest fields much earlier than anticipated

• Some fields are exhibiting dense/firm heads with growth cracks, while others are puffy and ribby resulting in more mechanical damage

• Palletized liner weights range from 33 to 49 pounds; the majority of heads weigh in the low 40s

• Increased dehydration, insect pressure, sunscalding, thrip damage, and weak tip are also expected in the coming days as the end of the season approaches

• Supplies are abundant; the market remains low, but is expected to rise in the coming weeks when the season ends
