UPDATE: Iceberg Market
October 27, 2015
Prices for iceberg lettuce continue to rise as the Salinas Valley season concludes and production starts in Huron, California and Yuma, Arizona.
- Current prices are in the low twenties, but will continue to rise over the next several weeks
- Industry supplies are very tight this week and will become even more limited by early next week
- Because growers are so far ahead of harvesting schedules in Salinas due to high temperatures, some iceberg growers have finished harvesting sooner than anticipated; this has created supply challenges while transitioning to Huron, California and/or the Arizona/California desert region
- Possible rain showers are expected this Wednesday, October 28 in Salinas, causing further shortages
- In addition to the Salinas season ending abruptly, challenges exist in Huron and Yuma
- Growers planted fewer crops in Huron this fall; the California drought has driven up water prices and resulted in limited industry stocks
- Quality problems are predicted in Arizona/California desert crops
- Yields will be lower than normal due to bottom rot, irregular head size, seeder, sunscald, and weak tip
- Tight supplies and elevated prices are expected through November
- Markon will continue to update members as more information becomes available and the Arizona/California desert winter season gets underway
