UPDATE: ICEBERG LETTUCE
September 04, 2020
Iceberg lettuce prices are rising.
- Supplies are tightening following Salinas Valley’s recent mid-August heatwave increased iceberg growth, forcing early harvests
- Yields have also been affected by soil-borne diseases including Sclerotinia and Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV); impacted heads are being identified by harvesting crews and culled from finished packs
- Quality remains strong; sporadic defects are present in some lots, including seeder, puffy texture, and internal burn
- Another heatwave will move into California’s Central Coast this weekend and persist through early next week
- Elevated temperatures may accelerate growth and limit how high the market will rise next week, but it will also further reduce volume moving forward
- Expect higher prices over the next two to three weeks
