UPDATE: ICEBERG

November 09, 2020

Iceberg prices are rising; stocks are limited.

  • Huron, California is currently the main growing region
    • Quality is very good: heat-related defects such as growth crack, seeder, and sun scald are present in some lots
    • Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus is minimal and easily avoided by harvesting crews as affected heads do not fully mature
    • Trace amounts of rain, ranging from 0.01” to 0.15”, is forecast for the weekend, but not expected to impact quality
  • Production in the Salinas Valley has ended for the season, shifting demand to Huron, California for north loading trucks
  • Disease and virus pressure brought the Salinas Valley season to an earlier-than-normal finish, resulting in overall light industry weights
  • The Arizona/California desert production has started in a limited manner
    • Initial quality is excellent although most heads in the first fields are very light in weight
    • Weights are anticipated to increase next week as temperatures warm up following this weekend’s cooler weather
  • Expect tight supplies and active markets for the next 7 to 10 days
  • Ready-Set-Serve Iceberg pricing will trigger to second-tier levels effective Monday, November 9
