UPDATE: HURRICANE IOTA

November 17, 2020

Hurricane Iota made landfall in Nicaragua on Monday, November 16 as a Category 5 Hurricane; 100mph+ winds caused major damage to infrastructure as have additional rains in areas already flooded from Eta.

A significant portion of the offshore winter melon crop is located in Zacapa, Guatemala which is currently in the path of the storm’s westward track. It is expected to drop approximately 10 to 20 inches of rainfall in the days to come.

Markon expects offshore cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon shipments out of Guatemala and Honduras to be heavily impacted by the storm over the next several weeks. Damages will be assessed later this week. Markon will continue to monitor and update as more information becomes available.
