UPDATE: Green Onions
December 22, 2016
Due to rainfall and cooler-than-normal weather conditions in Baja Mexico, green onion stocks are tightening and prices are rising. While the weather forecast suggests mostly dry conditions tomorrow, a cold front out of the Northwest is expected to sweep the growing region over the weekend, bringing more rain along with strong onshore winds. Limited supplies are anticipated for next week; prices will reach into the high teens to low twenties.
- Expect prices to climb into next week; Markon will monitor trigger levels for Ready-Set-Serve Green Onions and update in the coming days
- Due to the holidays, field labor is limited; this further tightens supplies
- The recent wet/cool climate will make onions more brittle and increase mechanical damage
- Expect smaller sizes and below-normal yields for the next several weeks
