UPDATE: Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine
July 02, 2019
Green leaf and romaine stocks are increasing in California’s Salinas Valley; prices are beginning to ease. Iceberg supplies remain limited; the market is elevated.
- Expect green leaf and romaine prices to begin their market decline as early as this week, while the iceberg market will descend over the next week or two
- A significant heat spike in early June stunted growth and caused uneven size/maturity in many iceberg crops
-
Iceberg growers must harvest more acres to meet weight requirements and processor demand
- This week’s lower yields are expected to keep the market elevated
- Quality is very good
- Regional growing areas (i.e. Colorado and Eastern Canada) will begin production over the next several weeks, increasing overall volume
