Update: Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine
April 04, 2019
Supplies of green leaf, iceberg, and romaine continue to transition from the Arizona/California desert region north to California’s San Joaquin and Salinas Valleys.
-
Weather is improving, maturing crops and creating ample supplies
- Expect desert region shipments to decline through mid-April
- The bulk of harvesting will take place in California’s San Joaquin Valley over the next two weeks
- California’s Salinas Valley will be shipping limited quantities next week, then increasing orders each week through April
- Planting gaps due to rain this past winter will tighten stocks from mid-April to mid-May
- Quality concerns and inconsistent supplies will cause fluctuating markets
-
Romaine will be very active by mid- to late April; yields will fall due to:
- Reduced acreage planted due to weaker demand over past two years
- Quality issues
