UPDATE: GREEN LEAF AND ROMAINE
September 04, 2020
Green leaf and romaine markets are climbing.
- Demand is strong
- Salinas Valley’s recent mid-August heatwave reduced green leaf and romaine supplies; weather-related defects, such as internal burn, seeder, sun scalding, and dehydration are limiting harvestable acres
- Another heatwave will move into California’s Central Coast this weekend and persist into early next week, further straining plantings and reducing yields
- Additionally, green leaf and romaine yields have been affected by soil-borne diseases including Sclerotinia and Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV)
- Expect elevated markets over the next two to three weeks at minimum
