UPDATE: FREEZE WARNING IN FLORIDA
February 20, 2015
Temperatures in areas of Belle Glade, Immokalee, Loxahatchee, and Naples fell into the 20s last night, but were only sustained for a short period. Damage seems to be minimal, yet further evaluation will take several days.
- Crops more sensitive to cold, such as corn, green beans, and yellow squash, will have the highest percentage of damage
- Warm weather is forecast, but it will take several days for plants to recover
- Expect higher prices for bell peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, squash, and tomatoes
- Bloom drop (a condition caused by stress where a plant blooms but fails to set fruit, and the bloom dies) will result in low yields in approximately 45 to 50 days
- Scarring will be apparent, especially on yellow squash, due to high winds
- Growers watered strawberry fields in anticipation of the freeze
- Cold weather has affected harvesting
- Production will remain on hold until weather warms on Sunday
- Markon will provide more updates as growers evaluate crops
