Cloudy skies, cool temperatures, and rain are forecast through this weekend in Homestead and Loxahatchee where items including bell peppers, corn, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, and squash are harvested. Next week’s temperatures will remain low (with daytime highs in the mid-60s and 40s at night) on Wednesday and Thursday. Rain will interrupt harvesting schedules and cool weather will slow product growth. Expect low Florida volume until conditions improve.

Bell Peppers

• Limited supplies persist, but the market is slightly lower as a result of increased Mexican stocks

Cucumbers

• Minimal domestic acreage is harvested from January through March; most stocks on the East Coast are being imported from offshore sources including Honduras and the Dominican Republic
• Offshore volume is increasing; quality is good
• Abundant Mexican supplies will keep prices low

Squash

• Inclement weather in Southern Florida has effected squash supplies
• Strong winds have damaged blooms
• Expect limited supplies for several weeks
• Quality is average; pitting, discoloration, and scarring are issues
• Even though growers are struggling to meet demand, ample Mexican stocks will ease prices

Other items

• Corn growers are struggling with weather-related quality issues; ears are small and only partially filled with kernals
• Eggplant supplies are tight; quality issues include discoloration, short shelf-life, and spotting
• Prices for green beans are high
• Supplies are tight
• Crops were severely damaged by recent rains
