UPDATE: Fall 2016 Harvesting Transition

The fall harvesting transition from the Salinas Valley to Huron, California (the San Joaquin Valley region) is underway; growers will move to Yuma, Arizona by early November. Preliminary reports from Huron reveal good quality with minimal insect and wind damage. The industry transition from Salinas/Huron to the Yuma/Imperial Valley growing regions will be complete by the week of November 21. Expect steady to slightly higher prices; supplies are forecast to meet demand (pending consistent weather).

 

Below are approximate transition dates (subject to change):

 

Weeks of October 24 and 31

  • Higher quantities of Markon First Crop (MFC) Premium Iceberg will be harvested in Huron
  • Limited amounts of MFC Premium Iceberg will remain available in Salinas
  • Transfers from Huron to Salinas will remain available (transfer fees apply)
  • MFC Premium Green Leaf and Romaine will continue to be harvested in Salinas

Week of November 7

  • Limited supplies of MFC Premium Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine will be available in Yuma and Salinas
  • MFC Premium Iceberg will remain available in Huron
  • Transfers to Salinas from Yuma and Huron will be available (transfer fees apply)
  • MFC Celery will be harvested in both Oxnard and Salinas (transfers out of Oxnard to Salinas are accessible if needed)

Week of November 14

  • Processors of Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) Salads and RSS Washed & Trimmed items are scheduled to begin processing and loading in Yuma
  • Markon commodity and processed items will be harvested and loaded out of the Arizona/California desert growing region as well
  • MFC Premium Iceberg harvested in Huron will also be an option (transfer fees apply)
  • MFC Premium Green Leaf and Romaine will continue to be harvested in Salinas (transfer fees apply)  
  • MFC Celery will be harvested in Oxnard and Salinas (transfers to Yuma are available)  

Week of November 21

  • MFC Premium Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine will be harvested in Yuma; some harvests will begin to take place in Coachella (transfer fees to Yuma are available)
  • MFC Celery will be harvested in Oxnard and Salinas (transfers to Yuma are available)
