UPDATE: Fall 2015 Harvesting Transition

The fall harvesting transition from the Salinas Valley to Huron, California (San Joaquin Valley) will take place in the next several weeks. Most growers only transition iceberg to Huron, while the majority of green leaf and romaine will stay in Salinas until the industry makes the full transition to Yuma, Arizona in late November.

 

Supplies are expected to be very tight with elevated markets through the transition. Heavy rains in the Yuma growing region have affected plantings and the possible threat of more rains in Salinas, Huron, and Yuma due to the high probability of El Nino will keep prices elevated for the next several weeks.

 

Below are approximate transition dates (dates are subject to change):

 

Week of October 12

  • Light harvesting of packer label iceberg will begin in Huron

 

Week of October 19 and October 26

  • Some Markon First Crop (MFC) Iceberg will be harvested in Huron
  • MFC Iceberg will remain available in Salinas
  • Transfers from Huron to Salinas will still be available (transfer fees apply)
  • Light harvesting of packer label green leaf and romaine will start in Yuma

 

Week of November 2

  • Limited supplies of MFC Green Leaf and Romaine will be harvested in Yuma
  • Transfers to Salinas will be an option (transfer fees apply)
  • Light harvesting of packer label iceberg lettuce will also begin in Yuma

 

Week of November 9 and November 16

  • MFC Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine will be available in Yuma and Coachella, California
  • Transfers to Salinas will be an option (transfer fees apply)

 

Week of November 23

  • Processors of Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) salads, RSS Washed & Trimmed items, and cello-wrapped products are scheduled to begin processing and loading in Yuma
