UPDATE: East Coast Weather
April 30, 2015
Heavy rain and wind moved into Central and South Florida this week. Rain in the bell pepper, cabbage, cucumber, and tomato growing regions interrupted harvesting, but severe shortages aren’t expected.
- Green bell pepper prices will rise over the next two weeks, but mainly due to the season ending in Florida and Mexico
- Some Florida fields received hail, which will lower yields during the final weeks of production
- Georgia harvests will start in mid-May; supplies are ample in Coachella, California
- Cucumber and squash production has moved to Georgia; prices will remain steady
- Spring tomato production is ample in Florida’s Ruskin-Palmetto region; large sizes dominate the crop
- Most growers let fields dry before packing product to avoid quality issues
