UPDATE: Easing West Coast Prices

January 15, 2016

Broccoli, green leaf, iceberg, and romaine prices are beginning to inch down. The combination of warmer weather in the desert growing region and heavy winter conditions in the Midwest and Northeast are weakening demand and creating more stocks in the supply chain.

Broccoli

  • Stocks are becoming more plentiful, especially in the northern districts of Mexico
  • The market is sliding; yields are increasing
  • Quality is improving
  • Mexican supplies (into South Texas) are adequate
  • Expect crown prices to settle in the low to mid-teens over the next several weeks

Green Leaf

  • Prices are easing; supplies are increasing
  • Warmer weather is aiding growth
  • Despite cold temperatures over the last several months there are very few freeze-related issues on the market now
  • Yields are high
  • Prices are expected to stabilize in the $10.00 to $12.00 range over the next couple of weeks

Iceberg

  • The past few weeks of elevated prices are finally beginning to inch down
  • Supplies are becoming more abundant due to ideal growing conditions
  • Yields and carton weights are increasing
  • Temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-70s for the next 15 days; because there isn’t any rain or freezing weather in the forecast, growers expect harvesting to run at full production
  • Prices are expected to ease into the low to mid-teens over the next several weeks

Romaine

  • Despite heavy freeze damage in most industry supplies, prices are easing
  • Ideal temperatures are promoting growth and increasing stocks
  • Expect prices to ease for the next several weeks
  • Quality is expected to improve in the next two to four weeks (depending on weather)
  • Expect prices to fall to the $10.00 to $12.00 range
