Markets are easing this week in the Yuma and Imperial Valley growing regions as recent warm temperatures are promoting growth and pushing supplies forward. Severe storms affecting the Northeastern US are slowing demand while desert production increases, creating a surplus across the main commodities including; iceberg, romaine, green leaf, broccoli and cauliflower. Expect a supply exceeds market for the next 7 to 10 days.

Iceberg

• Size and density is inconsistent due to freezing conditions in Decemember and January
• Warm temperatures are expected through the end of the desert season which will promote growth and help to even out sizeing
• Temperatures up to 91° are forecast this week in Yuma, AZ which could lead to heat related issues
• Cold, rainy weather on the East Coast along with increased supplies in the deser region will weaken prices this week
• MFC Lettuce is sporadic due to weights and sizing. MBA will be substitued as necessary

Romaine and Green Leaf

• Supplies are increasing as warm temperatures continue through the week
• Low demand and increased production will keep markets at steady to lower levels for the next 7 to 10 days
• Quality is excellent
• Romaine sizing is medium-plus to large. Heads are cupped shaped and showing minimal defects
• Some heat related defects may increase due to extended high temperatures in the desert growing regions
• MFC Romaine and MFC Green Leaf are available

Broccoli and Cauliflower

• Broccoli supplies are abundant in Arizona, California and South Texas. Demand remains flat with prices steady at low levels
• Quality is excellent; heads are dark green with even bead shape
• Cauliflower volume will increase through the weekend as warmer weather brings product forward
• Markets will ease into the mid to low teens by early next week
• MFC Broccoli and ESS Cauliflower is available
