UPDATE: Desert Growing Region Prices
March 16, 2017
Lettuce and leafy green prices continue to climb. The market is expected to remain in a demand-exceeds-supply scenario for the next three to four weeks.
- Unseasonably warm weather in the desert region continues to push harvests further ahead of schedule
- The desert season has one to two weeks left; expect limited supplies through early May, as the Salinas Valley will be able to harvest enough volume to cover demand
- While recent Salinas Valley temperatures are increasing, the cold and rainy weather California experienced last month has taken its toll on crops; the first plantings are scheduled to be harvested in late March/early April
- Production will start in the Central Valley/San Joaquin Valley region in a light way next week; insect pressure and lighter weights will keep overall supplies limited at the beginning of the season
Markon expects a sharp rise in prices over the next ten days; contract and value-added triggers will be met.
