UPDATE: Cucumbers
August 20, 2018
Cucumber prices are escalating on the West Coast; Mexican supplies are extremely tight. Michigan stocks are adequate, but supplies are expected to tighten in the coming weeks due to shifting demand.
-
Baja, Mexico is the primary growing region for West Coast cucumbers at this time of year
- High temperatures have caused bloom drop, resulting in low yields for most growers
- Many suppliers are experiencing a partial harvesting gap; new fields will start production in two to three weeks
- Growers in mainland Mexico will not begin harvests until early October
- Michigan is the primary growing region for East Coast cucumbers
- Weather has been favorable
- Supplies are adequate
- Quality is average this time of year; domestic shelf-life is typically shorter than that for Mexican product (order for quick turns)
- Expect limited availability and high prices for the next four to six weeks (through September)
