UPDATE: Cold Weather in Florida

February 17, 2015

Cold temperatures and occasional showers are forecast through the weekend in Florida. Early Friday morning temperatures are expected to fall into the low 30s in the vegetable growing regions of Belle Glade, Loxahatchee, and Immokalee. Low temperatures will stunt bell pepper, cucumber, and squash plant growth, resulting in tighter supplies and higher prices. If temperatures reach freezing, plants will be damaged and affect future yields.

Green bell pepper prices are already inching up due to tighter supplies in Florida and Mexico (loading in Nogales, Arizona and South Texas)

Domestic cucumber and squash plant growth will be slowed, but these items are being supplemented by imports from Central America (into the East Coast)

Tomato production is decreasing this week; any damage to plants will cause shortages over the next six to eight weeks

Impending rain will present quality problems for strawberries

o Bruising, softness, and water damage will be concerns

o Expect limited stocks
