UPDATE: Citrus Availability & Quality
September 26, 2019
California’s Valencia orange and coastal lemon seasons are winding down. As we transition out of both, quality has been and will be challenging with older fruit dominating the supply. Higher markets are expected as supplies of Markon quality fruit will be limited through the next month and a half.
Oranges
- Domestic Valencia’s have approximately four to five weeks left
- Growers expect the first domestic navels to come off the trees in mid-to late October
- Initial estimates show this year’s California navel crop to be down 6-8% in volume vs. last year with less fruit on the tree
- The size profile will be slightly larger this year vs last year, with sizing peaking on 88 and 72 counts
Lemons
- Coastal California lemon volumes will decrease significantly by mid-October
- Volume out of the Arizona/California desert region will pick up over the next 7-14 days to fill the loss of coastal supplies
- California’s San Joaquin Valley fruit is slated to be up and going by the week of October 14
- Domestic lemon supplies are expected to double by mid-October
