UPDATE: CANTALOUPE AND HONEYDEW MELONS

March 11, 2021

Offshore cantaloupe prices are easing. Honeydew prices are beginning to soar.

Cantaloupe

  • Offshore arrivals into the U.S. are up; yields out of Central America have increased
    • The majority of supplies are from Guatemala; Costa Rica and Honduras are also in production
    • The crop is dominated by smaller sizes such as 12- and 15-count fruit; jumbo/9-count melons are tight
    • Expect markets to ease through March
    • Offshore supplies will remain on the market into May
  • The domestic cantaloupe season will begin in early May

Honeydew

  • Mexican growers will transition to new growing regions over the next three weeks, causing a supply gap out of Nogales, Arizona and South Texas
    • Availability has tightened; prices are on the rise
    • Offshore supplies are adequate and will help fill the void
    • The crop is dominated by smaller sizes such as 6- and 8-count fruit; jumbo/5-count melons are limited
    • Expect elevated markets through late March; relief is not expected until early April when new crop Mexican production ramps up
  • The domestic honeydew season will begin mid-May
