UPDATE: California Strawberries

July 25, 2018

Strawberry prices are easing; ample supplies are expected in the Salinas/Watsonville, California growing region through September. Higher-than-normal day and nighttime temperatures are increasing volume, but are affecting quality in some lots. Cold-chain management remains a vital component of maximizing shelf-life.

  • Markon First Crop Strawberries are available; Markon Best Available and packer label will be substituted as needed
  • Recent warm weather is affecting quality and size
  • Expect bleeding, bruising, over-ripeness, pin rot, small size, softness, and reduced shelf-life over the next two weeks
  • The long-term forecast calls for ample supplies with promotable volume through the next six to eight weeks
