UPDATE: California Strawberries

February 28, 2018

Markon First Crop Strawberries are sporadic; Markon Best Available and packer label is being substituted as needed. California continues to be impacted by erratic weather. Cold temperatures and rain hit the Oxnard and Santa Maria, California growing regions yesterday, February 27, limiting strawberry supplies. Another storm system is expected to hit all California growing regions Thursday afternoon and last through Saturday, bringing up to an inch of rain to some areas. Mexican stocks (into South Texas) are winding down; Florida volume is high. California markets are expected to climb as supplies tighten.

Santa Maria

  • Freeze damage to blossoms and green fruit will reduce total yields as much as 40%
  • Growers are anticipating a supply gap by mid- to late March
  • Quality is very good; however, expect rain-related issues by the weekend

Oxnard

  • Supplies are limited; cold weather has slowed production
  • Growers are packing ahead in anticipation of wet weather
  • Quality is good

Watsonville

  • Harvesting has begun in a very limited way
  • Cold weather and rain have hindered production
  • Supplies will start ramping up in early April
