UPDATE: California Strawberries
June 15, 2017
Supplies have tightened due to last week’s rain. Growers had to cull damaged fruit, leading to lower-than-normal yields this week. High temperatures are forecast for today, June 15 through early next week, which will ripen berries faster, but could decrease quality and shelf-life.
- Markon First Crop Strawberries are sporadic; Markon Best Available and packer label will be substituted as needed
- Santa Maria temperatures are forecast to reach the mid-80s
- Salinas/Watsonville temperatures will reach the low 80s
-
The abnormally warm weather is expected to decrease berry quality and cause issues such as:
- Bruising/bleeding
- Over ripeness
- Small size
- Shortened shelf-life
- Soft texture
- Markon recommends ordering for quick turns and loading FOB (avoiding the cross-dock) when possible for best shelf-life
