Markon First Crop (MFC) and Markon Essentials (ESS) Oranges are sporadic; packer label is being substituted as needed. Supplies of 113- and 138-count oranges remain extremely limited; prices continue to rise. Late-season Navel oranges are dominated by 72-count and larger sizes. New crop Valencia harvesting will not ramp up until late May/early June. A limited supply of MFC and ESS Valencia Oranges will be available Monday, May 16. MFC and ESS Navel Oranges will continue shipping through May.

Navel

• California late-season Navel oranges are expected to remain on the market through mid-June
• Large sizes dominate the late-season crop; 113-count and smaller sizes are scarce
• Quality issues such as pressure pack, softness, and shortened shelf-life are concerns
• Flavor is sweet; sugar levels are higher than those for new crop Valencia fruit, ranging from 12 to 13 Brix
• Prices continue to rise for 113- and 138-count stocks; some suppliers have begun shipping Valencias in these sizes due to such strong demand
• Prices for 72-count and larger fruit remain steady at low levels

Valencia

• A few suppliers are currently harvesting new crop Valencia oranges; overall supplies remain tight
• Limited quantities of MFC and ESS Valencia Oranges will begin shipping Monday, May 16
• The crop is dominated by 72-, 88-, and 113-count sizes at the start of the season
• Quality is excellent
• Texture is firm (stronger than late-season Navels)
• Color is full and does not require gassing at this time; re-greening is not a concern at the beginning of the season
• Flavor is fairly-sweet with brix ranging from 9-11
• Supplies will increase over the next several weeks, reaching adequate levels by late May/early June; the season typically runs through October
• Prices are comparable to the Navel market and will continue rising as the season progresses
