Markon First Crop (MFC) Oranges are sporadic; packer label is being substituted as needed. Quality is very good. The transition from the Navel variety to new crop Valencias is underway. Limited quantities of late-season Navel supplies will remain on the market through next week. Prices are elevated, but should start easing by late May when new crop Valencia stocks increase.

California Navels

• The California Navel season is ending
• Limited quantities of late-season Navels will be on the market through next week
• Quality is good, but softness and puffy skins are concerns
• Flavor is sweet; sugar levels range from 13 to 15 Brix
• The crop is dominated by 72-count and larger fruit; 113- to 138-count supplies are scarce
• The market remains stable at high levels

California Valencias

• New crop Valencia fruit is on the market
• The crop is dominated by large sizes; 113-count and smaller fruit will remain tight through the summer months
• Fewer-than-normal trees made it past the bloom cycle this past spring
• Each bloom leads to a piece of fruit, hence fewer stocks came to full maturation this season
• This also created more room on trees, allowing fruit to grow larger in size
• Prices will be steady to slightly lower for 88-count and larger fruit; the market for 113-count and smaller sizes remains stable at high levels
• Flavor is mellow, but sweet; sugar levels range from 12 to 13 Brix
