The broccoli and cauliflower markets are beginning to rise. Abnormally warm temperatures in the Arizona/California desert and Northern Mexico growing regions during the month of February caused quality issues in broccoli crops. Salinas production has started, but is limited due to wet weather; supplies are tight. Cauliflower harvesting is winding down in the desert area; new crop supplies will increase in Salinas, California over the next several weeks. Expect elevated broccoli and cauliflower prices through March. 

Broccoli

• Markon First Crop Broccoli Crowns are sporadic; Markon Best Available will be substituted as necessary
• FOB crown prices have reached the low teens and will continue to rise   
• Branchy structure, brown bead, large size, long stems, and occasional flowering are problems drastically reducing yields
• Harvesting has begun in Salinas, but supplies are limited; recent wet weather slowed production
• Expect tight stocks and rising markets through March; volume is expected to increase by early April
  

Cauliflower

• The market is rising
• Supplies are tightening; the desert growing season is winding down
• Prices will reach the low to mid-teens by next week
• Salinas supplies will begin to ramp up over the next several weeks
• Large-size heads (9-count) are limited; smaller sizes (12- and 16-count) are more plentiful
• Expect very limited stocks for the next several weeks
• Markon Essentials Cauliflower is sporadic; packer label will be substituted
