UPDATE: BROCCOLI
September 11, 2020
Salinas and Santa Maria broccoli supplies are declining due to erratic weather.
- Two significant heatwaves, followed by cooler-than normal-temperatures, and reduced sunlight (due to smoke from the California fires) are taking their toll on broccoli quality and maturity
- Quality issues such as brown bead, hollow core, and pin rot have become prevalent in all California broccoli growing areas
- Harvesting crews are packing for the best quality, which reduces overall yields
- The market will continue to increase through September
