UPDATE: BROCCOLI
August 31, 2020
Salinas Valley broccoli supplies continue to tighten due to abnormally high temperatures during the weekend of August 15.
- Broccoli yields are lower than usual; extreme heat stresses plants, slowing maturity
- Quality issues such as rubbery texture, hollow core, and brown bead will emerge over the next few weeks as more hot weather is forecast through next week
- Crews will pack for the best quality; this culling will further reducing overall yields
- Expect elevated markets through mid-September
