Prices will rise next week as low temperatures and rain move through growing regions in Florida and Mexico, further tightening supplies. Expect these markets to remain elevated until volume increases in two to three weeks.

Florida

• Showers are forecast for several growing regions, including Homestead and Loxahatchee, from Sunday, December 13 through Monday, December 14
• This rain will increase the already elevated totals received over the past two weeks
• Production will be limited; growers will struggle to meet demand
• Expect shortened shelf-life and quality issues such as bruising and stem decay in bell peppers and light color and scarring in cucumbers, eggplant, and squash

Mexico

• Near-freezing temperatures are forecast in the state of Sonora in Northern Mexico tonight through Tuesday, December 15
• The northern part of the state will be the coldest; production is minimal from this region as most crops have transitioned south
• The southern part of the state will get low temperatures also, slowing bell pepper, cucumber, eggplant, green bean, melon, squash, and tomato harvesting
• The southern state of Culiacan will begin production in two to three weeks; this is the main winter growing region
• Culiacan is expected to receive rain this evening through Saturday, December 12; even though rain levels will be minimal, any delay in start dates for this area will further tighten already limited stocks
