UPDATE: Bell Peppers, Cucumbers, and Squash

June 16, 2015

Bell peppers, cucumbers, and squash harvesting is underway in summer growing regions. Supplies are ample on both coasts. Tropical Storm Bill in the western part of the Gulf of Mexico is forecast to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms into the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. Homegrown crops decrease demand for commercially grown produce during the summer, but damage could bring higher prices on both coasts.

Bell Peppers

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) and Markon Essentials (ESS) Green and Red Bell Peppers are available in California, Georgia, and South Texas
  • Green bell pepper harvesting is moving to summer production areas
    • Stocks will remain available in Georgia for several weeks before moving into Michigan and other regional areas by mid-July
    • Production in Central Mexico (into South Texas) has started; volume will increase in the coming weeks
    • California supplies are available in the San Joaquin Valley and coastal regions
    • Prices will be elevated until production increases, approximately one to two weeks
  • Red and yellow bell pepper harvesting will be in Coachella, California for the next 7 to 10 days, then move to the San Joaquin Valley and coastal locations
    • There are limited quantities available from Baja, California; volume will increase through June
    • Expect rising prices until production accelerates in early July
  • Fewer overall acres are planted in the San Joaquin Valley due to the California drought, but no shortages are expected

Cucumbers

  • MFC and ESS Cucumbers are available in Georgia and Mexico (into South Texas)
  • Georgia crops will wind down by late June; Michigan production will start by July 1
  • Supplies are ample in Central Mexico (into South Texas)
  • West Coast volume is dominated by Baja supplies (FOB San Diego, California); domestic stocks are sporadic

  • MFC Yellow Squash and Zucchini are available in California and Georgia
  • Harvesting will wind down in Georgia soon; limited production has started in Michigan
  • West Coast crops are centered in Santa Maria, California; growers are also harvesting in the San Joaquin Valley
