Harvesting for bell peppers, cucumbers, squashes, and several other commodities will move north on both coasts over the next few weeks. Expect unstable prices as production shifts from Florida to Georgia and mainland Mexico to California. 

Bell Peppers

• Markon First Crop (MFC) and Markon Essentials (ESS) Bell Peppers are available in California and Georgia
• Green bell pepper production is starting this week in Georgia
• California’s Coachella Valley has ample supplies of both green and red peppers
• Growers will harvest in Central Mexico (into South Texas) through the summer
• Expect a high market for the next three to four weeks, as mainland Mexico ships final quantities and California growers shift from Coachella to Bakersfield
• Quality is excellent: size is large and texture is crisp

Cucumbers

• MFC and ESS Cucumbers are available in Georgia and Mexico (into South Texas)
• East Coast production has shifted to Georgia; volume will increase over the next few weeks
• Baja supplies (loading in San Diego, California) will increase in early June; the season in mainland Mexico (into Nogales, Arizona) will end by late May
• Stocks are sufficient from Central Mexico (into South Texas)
• Prices have been steady for several months, but will rise until production increases (especially for No. 1 grade cucumbers such as Super Selects)
• Quality is best from new growing regions: supplies are firm and dark green with refreshing flavor

Squash

• MFC Squash is available in Georgia and will hit the California market in early June
• Stocks are ample in Georgia; expect some wind scarring
• California’s San Joaquin Valley has limited supplies; volume levels will be reached in Santa Maria in early June
• Prices will climb when harvesting ends in mainland Mexico over the next two weeks

Other Commodities

• Chile pepper prices will remain elevated until early June when production increases in Baja and California
• Corn supplies are limited due to increased demand for Memorial Day; stocks from California, Georgia, and South Texas will increase in 7 to 10 days
• Eggplant is available in California and Georgia
• Green bean prices have softened a bit, but will remain elevated into early June when supplies become more plentiful in California, Georgia, and Texas
• Hard squash production will transition to California’s San Joaquin Valley in June; stocks are available now in Georgia
