Prices are low for bell pepper, cucumber, and squash supplies from Florida and Mexico. Growing conditions have been ideal in both areas; demand remains weak due in part to cold temperatures throughout the Northeast.

Florida

• The main growing region of Immokalee is receiving light rain today; temperatures will continue to range from 80 degrees during the day to 50 degrees at night

o Some growers are curtailing harvests today to allow product time to dry; sunshine is in the forecast for the next 10 days

o Rain won’t affect prices; supplies remain ample

• Cucumber supplies and prices remain steady

o Most growers have finished harvesting the majority of domestic cucumber fields for the winter

o Offshore supplies from Yucatan, Mexico and the Dominican Republic are ample; all sizes are available

• Both domestic and offshore squash stocks are on the market

• Overall markets will start to rise over the next 7 to 10 days when demand returns to typical levels and retailers start to ship for the Easter holiday

• East coast production will start to transition from Florida to Georgia in May

Mexico

• Green bell pepper prices remain low, especially for ungraded choice supplies

o Prices will rise over the next two weeks, especially for large, graded sizes

o Harvesting will transition to northern fields; small sizes will dominate supplies as plants in the southern state of Culiacan, Mexico stop producing

o Domestic production will start in the Coachella, California region in early April; colored bell production will start in mid-May

• Colored bell pepper and cucumber production will remain steady in Culiacan through May

• Squash will remain abundant in northern fields; expect some scarring, especially on yellow squash, due to recent rain and wind
