UPDATE: BELL PEPPERS

California’s heat wave has increased green bell pepper production in Fresno and adversely affected red bell pepper quality in the Imperial Desert. East Coast green pepper production is transitioning to new growing regions over the next few weeks.
 
Green Bells

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) and Markon Essentials (ESS) Green Bell Peppers are available
  • Mexican supplies (into South Texas) are tight
  • High temperatures have increased growth in California’s Fresno area
    • Size is dominated by jumbo and extra-large peppers
    • Quality is good
  • Stocks are ample in Georgia and North Carolina
    • Quality is excellent
    • Markets are low
    • Expect local/regional programs to start in New Jersey, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia on July 1

Red Bells

  • MFC and ESS Red Bell Peppers are available
  • The heat wave in Imperial Valley, California reached temperatures as high as 115F that accelerated the fruit ripening process
    • Quality is fair and expected to decline; softness and shriveling are concerns in some lots
    • Markets are steady
    • Growers will transition to Fresno ahead of schedule in 7 to 10 days
  • East Coast supplies are limited
  • Canadian greenhouses are expected to have a lull in the production schedule over the next one to two weeks
  • Expect slightly higher prices
