UPDATE: BELL PEPPERS

December 16, 2020

Red bell pepper prices are rising; production is transitioning from California to Mexico. Green bell pepper prices are inching up as cooler weather slows harvesting in both Mexico and Florida.

Green Bells

  • The winter season out of Mexico (crossing into Nogales, Arizona and South Texas) is in full swing
  • Cold weather has resulted in lower volume in the primary growing regions of Culiacan, Sinaloa and Immokalee, Florida; supplies are limited
    • Florida will receive rain through Monday, further reducing supplies
    • Extra-large and large sizes are tightening
    • Choice grade stocks are more readily available
  • The market is expected to inch up this week and remain active heading into next week

Red Bells

  • The California desert season is winding down; supplies are tightening
  • Mexican harvesting has been behind schedule due to consistently cold weather early in the growing season
    • Tight supplies are trickling into Nogales, Arizona and South Texas
    • Expect increased stocks towards the end of December
  • Florida volume is extremely low
  • Expect active prices over the next several weeks until new crop supplies ramp up
