UPDATE: BELL PEPPERS

April 16, 2020

Prices are rising. Overall bell pepper volume has dropped significantly, especially green bell pepper stocks.

  • Nogales supplies are extremely limited
    • Decreased demand due to COVID-19 has slowed production; some growers actually abandoned fields before harvesting was complete
    • Overall yields have declined
    • Quality is below normal
    • Crop size is dominated by small peppers
  • Demand is shifting from Mexico to Florida, driving up prices
  • The California green bell season has started in a limited way; red bell pepper harvesting will begin the week of May 11
  • Production will start in Georgia by mid-May
  • Expect elevated markets and tight supplies for the next two to four weeks (when the domestic seasons ramp up)
