UPDATE: Avocados

July 25, 2019

Mexico’s summer volume continues to increase, while stocks from California and Peru are diminishing; those seasons will end within three weeks.

Please note that the three different crops on the market will exhibit different stages of ripeness. Mexico’s Flora Loca crop will be greener in color. To help illustrate the difference, Markon has attached a chart that shows the normal color associated with each stage of ripeness, as well as a freshly harvested avocado that has PSI levels of six to seven, which are in the Stage Four range.

  • Mexico’s Flora Loca volume will be 10-15% lower than last year
  • 48-count and larger sizes will be less plentiful than small fruit through mid-August
  • Ripening levels are a challenge as different crops at different stages of development are on the market
  • New crop fruit will take two or more days longer to ripen than other crops
  • PSI testing is the most reliable indicator of ripeness
