UPDATE: Avocados
February 17, 2017
Mexican avocado supplies are extremely tight due to a decline in production. California fruit is being harvested, but current stocks are being limited by rain.
- Current estimates predict the industry will harvest approximately 30 million pounds of fruit weekly; seasonal averages are usually 45-50 million pounds per week
- The Mexican crop size is much lower than initially anticipated at the start of the season
- Limited production will result in high price; Mexican growers are trying to stretch the current supplies to avoid product gaps
- All sizes are extremely limited; demand exceeds supply
- Flexibility in sizing and grade may be needed for order coverage
- The California crop is 50% below last season’s volume
