UPDATE: Avocados

The avocado market is stable; supplies are ample in California and Mexico. The California crop is three to four weeks early and exhibiting signs of high maturity levels. The Mexican crop dominates the market as Cinco de Mayo nears. Expect Peruvian fruit to become available in May.
California
- The California season is in full swing
- Supplies are adequate; peak volume is expected from May through July, just in time for spring and summer holiday demand
- The current crop is dominated by 48- to 60-count sizes
- Quality is excellent
- Oil content is high
- Ripening time is average
Chile
- The 2014/2015 Chilean season has ended
- Volume into the U.S. was 75% below last season
- Most of the crop stayed in Chile or went to Europe, where prices were higher
- The 2015/2016 season is anticipated to be larger with more volume coming into the U.S.
- The season is forecast to start in early October
Mexico
- Mexico’s winter/normal crop is ending; the majority of fruit being shipped is now from the spring/Marciena crop
- Marciena fruit is typically rounder in shape, has smoother skin, and tends to be slightly smaller than other crops
- Fruit is dominated by 60- and 70- count sizes
- A hailstorm several weeks ago caused an estimated 10-15% damage to the upcoming summer/Flora Loca crop that typically starts in mid-July
- Quality is good
- Oil content is high
- Fruit requires minimal ripening time
Peru
- Peruvian fruit is scheduled to arrive in the U.S. in May
- Large sizes (40- and 48-count fruit) are expected to dominate the crop, complimenting the smaller size fruit from California and Mexico
- An estimated 40-50% of supplies will be sent to the U.S. this year
- Peak volume is expected from June to August and will be dominated by 40-count and larger sizes
- Early season quality is forecast as good
- Oil content will be low
- Fruit will require extra ripening time
